Winter Storm

Winter storms can do damage on your favorite trees but overall snow cover is great to insulate and protect your trees until they bud in the spring.

During major snowstorms, it is best to remove heavy snow from vulnerable plants while it still is falling, rather than waiting until the snow has a chance to freeze. Once snow is frozen on the plant, trying to remove it can cause a lot of damage, so then it is best to let it melt off. This is also the case for freezing rain that covers plants in ice.

If plants already have been damaged by snow or ice, there is not much you can do other than to prune off any branches that are a safety hazard.

Wind Warning

With the wind gusting as high at 30+ mph in some areas of town, there are the top 3 things to know when it comes to your tree when the wind is blowing.
1.) Trees are meant to sway. When your trees sway it actually helps your tree trunk to become stronger.
2.) Removing the broken and dead limbs in your trees allows wind to blow through your tree and will lower the chances of the tree falling or leads breaking.
3.) Preventative care is the best care. Having yearling inspections of your trees health is the best thing you can do. Catching things early is the safest for your home and property.

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that your tree stump can tell you so much more that how old the tree is?

The light-colored rings represent wood that grew in the spring and early summer, while the dark rings represent wood that grew in the late summer and fall. The color and width of tree rings can provide snapshots of past climate conditions, as well as pest or even scars the tree has endured.

What does your stump say about you?

The science of tree-ring analysis is called dendrochronology!

Planting trees and shrubs can save you up to 25 percent on your energy bills. A shade tree can help cool your home by as much as 20 degrees in the summertime. Not only do they provide shade in the summer, but serve as a windbreak in the winter, too.

2) Trees block noise by reducing sound waves.

They reduce noise through a phenomenon called sound attenuation, which is the reduction of sound intensity. Leaves, twigs, and branches on trees, shrubs, and herbaceous growth absorb and deflect sound waves to mask unwanted noise.

3 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO GET YOUR TREES PREPPED FOR SPRING

1) Inspect Your Trees for Pests and Damage
Winter is hard on trees. In addition to the insects and animals that may have made their home in your trees, you may also see signs of disease or damage from winter storms. If you’re not sure if what you’re seeing is a disease, us take a look and assess your tree’s health.
2) Prune Your Trees
Just like getting a trim helps your hair grow, tree pruning is a great way to prepare your trees for spring. The best time to prune trees is right before the spring. Pruning is a great chance to remove dead or diseased branches as well as give your tree more room to grow by preventing branches from crowding.
3) Remove Dead Trees and Plant New
Preventative tree assessments and removing dead trees are essential for getting your yard ready for spring. A tree assessment will alert you to any issues that may become hazardous later into the season. If you do have to get a tree professionally removed because it’s diseased or interfering with your plans, there’s always a chance to plant a new tree and bring new life to your yard.

Sometimes it’s good to look up…

It can be beneficial to start looking at your trees in the winter as you can clearly see seeing if the tree is dead or has broken branches. Its easier to notice disease/ issues without its leaves on the tree. Sometimes tree will encroach on your property, and now is the time to get them pruned up and clear of roof lines. If you are noticing excessive amounts of brown needles in conifers this can be a sign of disease or decline of the health of the tree.

When and if you notice any of these signs feel free to reach out to us here at Spokane Tree Pro for a health assessment on your tree. 509-998-2771
